Olympic Cairn Home at Last!

The 1976 Olympic Sailing Cairn is, after 30 years, now permanently stationed at its home berth in the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.    This historical monument’s dedication ceremony, held on June 16th in conjunction with the CORK/Youth Worlds Operations meeting, brought together many faces from the 1976 games.  Lynn Waters, who was a Jury Member at the 1976 Sailing Competition was quite pleased to be a part of the Cairn’s dedication.  “This is a wonderful way to recognize the many volunteer hours spent to bring elite competitions to Kingston…a wonderful sailing location!”

Tim Irwin, CORK Regatta Chairman, brimmed with enthusiasm as he and Councillor Mark Gerrettson unveiled the Olympic Cairn to the crowd of sixty sailing enthusiasts.   As Tim Irwin later indicated,  “It is fantastic that the Cairn now stands at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour to promote elite sailing, and the many people that have and will continue to make sailing regattas in Kingston a success!”

Kingston’s Olympic Cairn can now be seen at the southeast corner of the Harbour Building, overlooking the marina and within eyeshot of the tetra on the breakwater.

The plaque by the Olympic Sailing Cairn now reads:

1976 Olympic Cairn Sailing – Montreal Games

Dedicated to the many Citizens of Kingston and volunteers from everywhere whose hard work supported the Sailing Events held at this venue, and who have supported CORK events since its inception in 1969.
