During the 1976 Olympic Sailing Competition, the flames from the Olympic Cairn kept the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour entrance bright and alive.
At a recent City of Kingston Council meeting, the motion to erect this historical monument with a dedication plaque honouring volunteers and volunteerism was approved. Since 1969, thousands of dedicated, enthusiastic and skilled volunteers have ensured the international CORK regatta series remains a success. These volunteers have brought hundreds of world and continental championships to Kingston, and certainly are to credit for building the momentum necessary to host the 1976 Olympic Sailing competition! Volunteerism is the key to a successful sailing competition, and it is hoped that the cairn will continue to inspire the involvement of present and future volunteer.
The Olympic Cairn’s new official home will naturally be at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, facing the marina. There is no doubt that the Olympic Heritage is still strong in “Sailing’s Fresh Water Capital of the World”, and the City of Kingston Council would like to ensure it remains visible.
The dedication ceremony will take place at 1pm on June 16th, by the south-east entrance to the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour building (53 Yonge St). This entrance is the one which faces the marina, and is in front of the CORK office. All are welcome to attend!
The Olympic Cairn dedication ceremony takes place in conjunction with the June 16th CORK/VOLVO Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships Training Session, Operation’s Meeting and Social. More details on this meeting are available at here.
